I have to let you into a secret dear reader, The Little Mermaid was the bane of my life for most of my childhood, causing many tears, tantrums and great stress for the Heaton household. You see my little sister (Bob) had been given a copy for Christmas and that’s all she wanted to watch.
In all honesty I had no real or burning desire to watch Russell Crowe play an English folklore legend whilst attempting a Midlands accent, but it was too late…the tickets had been bought…time to man up.
I was really impressed by this film, I came out of the screen feeling inspired, wishing I didn’t have the balance of a ninety year old with an inner ear infection, and that for once a film had made realise that being a girl was pretty damned cool.
I loved worshipped and adored this film. It had me laughing, crying, hiding behind my hands and bouncing up and down in excitement.
To some of the audience it became too violent, but not gratuitously so in my opinion, and two people walked out. Despite some of the audiences disapproval, I found Blackwater to be both well shot and well written, with an ambiguous ending leaving us unsure as to whether he was going to exact the same revenge upon his wife as he did with the others…
As well as his uncanny resemblance to Oscar Wilde, it is his gentle and sympathetic approach to the character and his story that affects the viewer and I would recommend this film for Fry’s casting, if for nothing else.
